How to use the BitBox01 backup center?

    Before you start

    • The BitBox01 backup center should only be used if absolutely necessary as you will have to plug your microSD card into your computer.
    • The Backup center should be run on an offline computer.

    Requirements

    * If you created your wallet before Aug 2018 then the recovery password is identical to the normal device password you chose when you created the wallet. For wallets created since Aug 2018 you had to explicitly enter a wallet recovery password which can be different from the normal device password.

    Instructions to get the wallet keys

    1. Run the BitBox01 backup center on an offline computer
    2. Open the BitBox01 wallet microSD card in your file explorer and open the PDF backup file
    3. Copy the "Wallet backup" key and paste it into the "wallet backup" field in the backup center.
    4. Enter the wallet recovery password in the "password" field.
    5. Click "Generate" and wait for the fields below to populate.
    6. Next, decide which keys you need to import in order to access your wallets

    Keys

    • BIP32 extended master private key: rarely needed
    • Bitcoin Electrum Legacy BIP44 recovery key: Use with Electrum to restore "Bitcoin Legacy" account
    • Bitcoin Electrum p2sh-segwit BIP49 recovery key: Use with Electrum to restore "Bitcoin" account
    • Bitcoin Electrum native-segwit BIP84 recovery key: Use with Electrum to restore "Bitcoin: bech32" account
    • Bitcoin Electrum recovery key for a multisig wallet: Needed if you were using Copay
    • Litecoin Electrum Legacy BIP44 recovery key: Use with Electrum-LTC to restore "Litecoin Legacy" account
    • Litecoin Electrum p2sh-segwit BIP49 recovery key: Use with Electrum-LTC to restore "Litecoin" account
    • Litecoin Electrum native-segwit BIP84 recovery key: Use with Electrum-LTC to restore "Litecoin: bech32" account
    • Ethereum private keys: List of Ethereum private keys that can be imported into an Ethereum wallet

    Example: Restoring "Bitcoin Legacy" account via Electrum

    You need key: "Bitcoin Electrum Legacy BIP44 recovery key:"
    1. Open Electrum & enter a name for the new wallet e.g. "BitBox01 Bitcoin Legacy attempt 1" and click "Next".
    2. Select "Standard Wallet" and click "Next".
    3. Select "Use a master key" and click "Next".
    4. Paste the corresponding key into the field. In this example paste the "Bitcoin Electrum Legacy BIP44 recovery key" that the backup center gave you and click "Next".
    5. You can leave these password fields empty and click "Next".
    6. You have now restored the wallet, it might take a couple of seconds for the history to load.
    7. Transfer your coins to a secure wallet immediately. Do not leave them in the restored wallet.

    Example: Restoring "Bitcoin" account via Electrum

    You need key: "Bitcoin Electrum p2sh-segwit BIP49 recovery key"
    1. Open Electrum & enter a name for the new wallet e.g. "BitBox01 Bitcoin p2sh-segwit attempt 1" and click "Next".
    2. Select "Standard Wallet" and click "Next".
    3. Select "Use a master key" and click "Next".
    4. Paste the corresponding key into the field. In this example paste the "Bitcoin Electrum p2sh-segwit BIP49 recovery key" that the backup center gave you and click "Next".
    5. You can leave these password fields empty and click "Next".
    6. You have now restored the wallet, it might take a couple of seconds for the history to load.
    7. Transfer your coins to a secure wallet immediately. Do not leave them in the restored wallet.
    If the restored wallet is empty, there are two possibilities, both apply to the backup center:
    • You used the wrong backup PDF file to get the wallet backup key
    • You did not enter the exact same wallet recovery password that you used when you created the wallet
